For Immediate Release: Wednesday, March 5, 2025

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will host a Landscaping with Batteries Field Day from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 at the Montgomery College Germantown Campus, located at 20200 Observation Dr. Attendees can participate in equipment demos from 12 manufacturers, receive vendor discounts and enter raffles to win landscaping equipment.

The workshop and demonstration are taking place in advance of the County’s ban on gas-powered lawn equipment, which will go into effect on July 1, 2025.

"Our transition away from gas-powered leaf blowers is about reducing noise pollution and moving toward a more sustainable future,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “Events like the Landscaping with Batteries Field Day give landscapers and residents a chance to see firsthand how effective battery-powered equipment can be. As we transition to phasing out gas-powered leaf blowers in Montgomery County, I applaud the Department of Environmental Protection’s efforts to engage and educate our community.”

The event is free but registration is recommended. Local lawn equipment vendors and battery-powered lawncare equipment manufacturers will be onsite. Bilingual staff will be available to aid with Spanish translations.

“Our goal at DEP is to support everyone in making a seamless transition from gas to cleaner, more efficient battery and electric-powered tools,” said DEP Director Jon Monger. “The Landscaping with Batteries Field Day provides a great opportunity for residents, landscapers and gardeners to discover the many benefits of battery-powered tools. Switching to electric-powered equipment can reduce environmental impact and improve the overall well-being of our community.”
