The Montgomery County’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently hosted the 2025 Students’ Waste Reduction-Reuse-Recycling Poster Contest Recognition Ceremony in Rockville. The event honored K–12 students who participated in the annual art contest, which encourages youth to creatively explore environmental themes. Originally launched decades ago as a recycling poster contest, the initiative has since expanded to highlight waste reduction and reuse—key components of the County’s zero-waste strategy.

“I want to thank all the students who took part in this contest; it is clear that they get the sense of urgency to combat climate change,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “Their artwork is a reminder that environmental education isn’t just something taught in a classroom—it’s something that comes to life when young people start thinking critically about the choices we all make. Reducing waste, cutting down on single-use plastics and reusing materials aren’t abstract ideas. They are real actions we can take to protect the planet, and it’s powerful to see students leading the way. I also want to thank the parents, teachers and judges who supported this effort. These students give me hope, and we need that.”

This year’s theme challenged students to think critically about single-use plastics and illustrate ways to reduce their use, particularly in school settings. The contest received 155 entries from students at 27 public and private schools and is the highest participation since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am so impressed by our students who continue to inspire us with their passion, creativity and deep understanding of environmental stewardship,” said DEP Director Jon Monger. “Their artwork not only reflects the importance of reducing waste, reusing materials and recycling—it also shows us that the next generation is already speaking up and taking action to promote a more sustainable future.”
