Montgomery County Partners With Business Establishments to Combat Under 21 Alcohol Use

For Immediate Release: Monday, January 4, 2010

Montgomery County’s Department of Liquor Control (DLC) is teaming up with local businesses that sell or serve alcohol in an effort to combat under 21 drinking rates in the County. DLC will be distributing 2010 identification (ID) checking calendars to every establishment in the County with a liquor license to help ensure that underage patrons cannot buy alcohol.

The calendar is an expansion of an award-winning “Keeping It Safe” public education campaign designed to educate businesses and the community on alcohol laws and social host responsibility. An ID checking guide attached reads, “If you were not born on or before today’s date in 1989 you cannot buy alcohol.” It also features reminders such as license renewal deadlines and service hour changes, monthly safety tips, free program announcements geared towards licensees, signage and a responsible hospitality newsletter.

Another public education campaign called “Social Host Responsibility” is promoted year-round through printed materials and speaking engagements. This campaign aims to change the culture and promote parental communication and zero tolerance for underage alcohol use.

The calendars were funded through a grant from the Maryland State Highway Administration's Washington Metro Region Highway Safety Office.
