Department of Liquor Control Reaches Out to Business Establishments in Long Branch

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 3, 2003

The Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control (DLC) is reaching out to businesses in the Long Branch community in order to help them sell and serve alcohol in a responsible manner and comply with state laws. DLC staff will distribute resources such as ID checking books, signs and posters, starting Friday, September 5.

The DLC Community Outreach Office is currently developing business alliances throughout the County. Some of the goals of the alliance include providing incentives for responsible hospitality, improving practices and policies of high risk establishments, providing easy-to-use tools for staff development, facilitating more efficient access to information and educational programs, and enhancing the professional skills and image of those selling and serving alcoholic beverages.

DLC Community Outreach Manager Kathie Durbin and Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation contractor Sonia Nieves have been working with the Long Branch Task Force to assist in developing a safe community and healthy businesses. Durbin and Nieves will begin the effort by visiting the owners of 17 establishments that have already signed a Code of Conduct agreement with the County. Businesses that sign the agreement will also receive a certificate of appreciation and be included in future events and free seminars.

Later this month, the Community Outreach staff will work with business owners and managers in the Wheaton area to provide similar services.
