Department of Liquor Control Reports Recent Compliance Checks Produced No Illegal Sales to Minors

Montgomery County’s Department of Liquor Control’s (DLC) most recent round of alcohol compliance checks in Rockville revealed no illegal sales to minors were made. Of the 20 compliance checks conducted, all servers and sellers asked for identification, read it properly and denied service.
During an under-21 compliance check, youth – no older than 19 and following a strict protocol – are sent into licensed establishments and/or stores to attempt to purchase alcohol with their underage identification. The individuals use their own identification and are not allowed to have facial hair, wear excessive makeup or talk on the phone while making a purchase.
“In past compliance checks, some clerks asked for an ID but did not take the time to properly read the birth date on the card,” said DLC Chief of Licensure, Regulation and Education Kathie Durbin. “It’s encouraging to see businesses develop responsible alcohol policies that will have a positive impact on our community.”
Compliance checks are an educational and enforcement tool implemented to reduce the availability of alcohol to youth under 21 years of age. DLC Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement Specialists and Montgomery County Police and Sheriffs departments conduct compliance checks in tandem ensuring a fair and evenly distributed number of checks.
