Driver Arrested in Fatal Pedestrian Collision

Gaithersburg, MD — Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) have arrested 35-year-old Dori Campbell on charges related to a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

Campbell, of Silver Spring, was driving a black 2011 Volkswagen CC southbound on New Hampshire Avenue at approximately 4:40 a.m. when she struck 39-year-old Ernest Joseph Dyson of Clinton. Dyson, a WSSC Water employee, was working near the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Rodney Road at the time of the collision.

The investigation revealed that Campbell was traveling 50 miles per hour, ten miles over the posted 40-mph speed limit and had a blood alcohol content of 0.19, more than twice the legal limit. A half-empty bottle of alcohol was found in the front passenger seat of Campbell’s vehicle.

Dyson was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel.

On Monday, November 25, 2024, Campbell was taken into custody on a warrant charging her with the following offenses:

  • Negligent manslaughter by vehicle
  • Negligent homicide by vehicle while under the influence
  • Driving on a suspended out-of-state license
  • Driving an uninsured vehicle

Campbell is being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where she is awaiting a bond hearing.
