County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Housing Unlimited Inc. Welcome Home Celebration

Bethesda Country Club

7601 Bradley Boulevard, Bethesda

As prepared

Good evening! I appreciate the opportunity to join everyone tonight for this “Welcome Home Celebration” with Housing Unlimited.

The celebration highlights some of the partnerships that help make it possible for Housing Unlimited to provide individuals – who have mental health difficulties AND very modest incomes – a chance to live independently and get back on their feet.

One of my top priorities for Montgomery County is to provide affordable, inclusive housing options.

The Housing Unlimited program provides not only comfortable, affordable housing, but also the empowering support and opportunities that allow individuals to build the next chapter in their lives and feel included.

Housing Unlimited allows people to achieve mental health recovery and reach their potential for more independence.

They achieve this by providing safe, affordable housing that is matched with education and training for tenants; an autonomous tenants’ council; internship opportunities to help get back into the job market; community engagement opportunities; and, the chance to pursue education that can also help lead to greater opportunities for employment.

Housing Unlimited is such a good design because it was started by caring, Montgomery County families who were concerned about the lack of affordable housing for individuals who experience mental health challenges.

Over the years, and under Abe Schuchman’s leadership, Housing Unlimited has expanded its empowerment services for residents while also expanding its capacity to serve 192 individuals, in 69 residences, across the County.

Housing Unlimited succeeds, in part, due to partnerships and collaborations with many public, private, and individual contributors.

For example, across more than two decades, the County’s Department of Housing and Community Affairs has provided Housing Unlimited with $3.5 million in property acquisition assistance.

The State has provided additional grants. Individuals and partners have provided critical support, as well.

However, even with all that Housing Unlimited has accomplished, there are still 309 low-income individuals with psychiatric disabilities who are on a waiting list for a room in an HUI home.

That’s why I’m so happy to see so many here tonight. Together, Montgomery County can do even more to protect and empower our community by continuing to support organizations like Housing Unlimited.

Thank you!
