County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at The Beacon 50+ Expo

Silver Spring Civic Building

1 Veterans Place, Silver Spring

As prepared

Good afternoon and welcome to the Beacon 50-plus Expo! I am pleased to see so many people here today.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the many programs and resources available to all of us, here in Montgomery County. I am also glad to be here today with Stuart Rosenthal, publisher of the Beacon. We have a good partnership.

Looking around this Expo, it should be clear to all of you that Montgomery County has lots to offer those of us who are age 50-plus. I urge you to learn about and take advantage of many of the great opportunities at the Expo today.

I especially urge you to keep your eyes out for a copy of the Beacon and that you look at the Montgomery County page. In fact, I hope you read the Beacon each month – free copies are available at stores and other places around the County.

The Montgomery County page is easy to find, because it is quite colorful and has photos of four smiling people across the top.

There you can find info about free summer movies and concerts; ways to join a Village or start one in your community; sports and exercise classes available at our County Recreation Centers and Senior Centers; services to help you find employment or new volunteer opportunities; and, ways to find hiking and biking trails; and so much more.

You can also find all this same information on our County’s website WWW Dot Montgomery County MD Dot Gov, or you can call for information by dialing 3-1-1.

You may have heard that Montgomery County is an Age-Friendly community – which means we are a great place to live for people of all ages.

In short, Age Friendly Montgomery County means we have - and are always improving our efforts to provide – high-quality transportation options; safe and affordable housing; health, wellness and community-based services to help people stay healthy and get needed care.

We also provide opportunities to stay involved in our community through work, volunteering, sports, classes and other fun and social engagement; public safety initiatives; and, much more.

Again, I am very glad to see so many people here at the Expo today, because Montgomery County has many opportunities for people to enjoy themselves, stay healthy, and engage in what matters to each of us – at any age.

I hope everyone finds something new and interesting and has a great time today!

Thank you!
