County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Needwood Road Bike Path Ribbon-Cutting

Needwood Road at Equestrian Lane, Rockville

As prepared

Good morning!

Today, we celebrate the opening of another section in our expanding network of biking and pedestrian paths and throughout Montgomery County.

Phase I of the Needwood Bike Path now provides bicyclists, joggers and walkers a safe and enjoyable route, parallel to Needwood Road.

One of the biggest benefits of this path is that residents can use it to get to the Shady Grove Metro station.

This shared-use path, which could not have been accomplished without the support of the County Council and the Maryland Department of Transportation Bikeways Program, provides people a safe way to pedal, run, or walk – to and from Rock Creek Park – as well as along the Rock Creek Trail and the ICC shared-use path.

Later, it will connect to the future North Branch Trail.

As I stated earlier, this is just Phase I of the Needwood Road Bike Path which is about two-thirds of a mile long.

Next year, we will begin construction of Phase II of the Needwood Bike path, extending it about a mile to Magruder High School. That will provide another good transportation option for area high school students.

Montgomery County is continually looking for more opportunities for people to get out of their cars and commute as bicyclists and transit riders as we aim to increase health and reduce congestion.

This path is another step toward that goal. Thank you!
