County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the WABA-sponsored Ribbon-Cutting for Silver Spring Protected Bike Lanes

Woodside Urban Park, 8800 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring

As prepared

It is exciting to be here today with so many community members and bicycle advocates to celebrate Silver Spring’s first protected bike lane.

I want to thank the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, “WABA,” for organizing this celebration today.

And, I want to recognize WABA for being such a great advocate as we seek to develop improved bicycling facilities throughout Montgomery County.

They have unique expertise regarding bicycling in Montgomery County; and we value their ideas and suggestions.

As we celebrate today, we can raise awareness about this protected route – so that more people will use it to get around.

Silver Spring has a growing community of residents, retail stores, employers, artistic venues, restaurants and other options.

This stretch of protected bike lanes can help connect residents and visitors to all that Silver Spring has to offer.

These bike lanes are the first piece of a network of low-stress bike facilities planned for downtown Silver Spring.

As we continue building these biking lanes, we will expand opportunities for bicyclists to reach nearby destinations and to connect to more bike routes.

So,again, I want to thank WABA for their expertise and support; and I encourage everyone to enjoy using this protected bike path, today and every day.
