County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Montgomery County Agricultural History Farm Park

18400 Muncaster Road, Derwood

 As prepared

Good Morning! It is a pleasure to be here today.

I do not often have the chance to have press conferences in a barn, but this will be more fun than being in a conference room. Although, I am not sure that the pigeons, who have their nests in here, appreciate all this ruckus.

Holding this event, here at the Montgomery County Agricultural History Farm Park in this beautiful barn, constructed in 1895, symbolizes the County’s enduring support to its farming heritage.

To continue that heritage, we must all do our part to build a more sustainable community for future generations.

Our Green Business Certification Program is continually expanding the list of third-party standards it recognizes.

I am proud to ANNOUNCE TODAY that farms implementing comprehensive sustainability practices are NOW listed in the County’s Green Business Directory, joining the more than 80 Certified Green Businesses.

Today we are celebrating farmers who embrace environmental stewardship, and whose farms have been certified by either of two robust third-party sustainability standards:

USDA Organic or

Certified Naturally Grown

Both standards require a full commitment to organic practices – no synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or genetically engineered seeds.

And both standards focus on building and conserving soil nutrients through compost, cover crops, crop rotation and other practices.

These farmers do not just protect our natural resources. They provide us with healthy foods and do so with love and artistry.

The farmers we recognize today nourish our bodies and soul; take care of our land, help to preserve beautiful landscapes and strengthen our humanity.

They serve a critical role in making Montgomery County such a special place.

Before we present our farmers with their certificates, I would like to turn it over to Jeremy Criss, our Director of Agricultural Services, and other partners, to say a few words.
