County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Design for Life Press Event

As prepared

Good afternoon.

We’re here today to show you the progress we’re making on one of our groundbreaking programs – Design for Life.

This is an idea that will make a tremendous difference in the lives of many Montgomery County residents by providing some financial support for them to stay in their homes as they age and as their physical conditions change.

The program makes tax credits available to homeowners and to builders for renovation and for new construction to make certain that homes accommodate not only the residents who live there, but also others who might visit.

For example, homeowners can qualify for a tax credit by installing a no-step entrance, wider doorways or by making rooms more accessible with more space to maneuver.

Builders who design accessibility into the homes they construct will have tax incentives as well.

They will also have a fast track through the permitting process.

Today we are going to see some of the first projects completed with the help of the Design for Life program.

They are featured on the web site, www.designforlifemc.org.

This program has great promise for making the lives of our County residents more comfortable, either as they renovate their homes or move into new ones.
