County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the HHS – Fishers Lane Ribbon Cutting

5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville

As prepared

Good afternoon.

I am pleased to be here this afternoon to help cut the ribbon for this grand new facility.

For more than 40 years, the Parklawn Building was one of the most recognizable buildings in Montgomery County.

Like most buildings, it needed an upgrade, and this result is magnificent.

The project included four brand new cores, all new glass curtain wall, a new main lobby and a stunning 14-story atrium. The building also received a new roof, an energy efficient DOAS HVAC system, another level of garage parking and several other major upgrades.

Dear to my heart, this project is an early example of Smart Growth because of its proximity to mass transit.

To top it off, the building achieved a LEED Platinum certification and Energy Star rating.

We have been pleased to be a partner with HHS for many years, including leading the effort to keep you here.

The Department of Health and Human Services is at the core of our Montgomery County economy.

The National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, are some of the fundamental building blocks that led to the construction of our vital biotech-biohealth industry here in Montgomery County.

We are pleased to be in a lasting and productive partnership with this department and its various components.

I wish you the best in this new and wonderful facility.
