County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Muslim Solidarity Reaffirmation

Islamic Society of Germantown (Mosque)

19825 Blunt Rd., Germantown

As prepared

I am grateful and honored to be with you this afternoon along with Council President Nancy Floreen at the Islamic Society of Germantown to reaffirm Montgomery County’s solidarity with the people of the Muslim faith.

We are here to make sure that you know that it is our firm belief that you, the members of the Muslim community in the County, are valued and respected.

The Muslim community of Montgomery County – as individuals and organizations – is an integral part of our County’s celebrated, diverse makeup. Muslim residents contribute to the welfare of the greater community in myriad ways.  Muslim organizations invest thousands of volunteer hours serving on County Commissions and Committees and in nonprofit and social service agencies.

Muslim businesses contribute greatly to the community with a wide variety of enterprises including: medical, professional trades, restaurants, storefronts, IT services, and startups that show tremendous creativity and innovation.

These businesses fuel our local economy by providing jobs and keep Montgomery County business-friendly.

The valued religious diversity of our County welcomes our Muslim residents and often demonstrates the essential cooperation that makes our model so special, as congregations of all religions work in harmony to provide support, sponsor interfaith services and other forms of cooperation which are contribute to making this county more compassionate and just.

As far as our County government is concerned, we are working diligently every day to ensure we are hearing concerns, meeting needs, and addressing problems when and where they arise in every aspect of life in the County.

We are working to ensure respectful and effective services toward the Muslim community to include but not limited to law enforcement, legal, business, and education.

It is our firm commitment that you will be safe and that acts of hatred against Muslims will not be tolerated in Montgomery County.

Please know that we, and Montgomery County, affirm our solidarity with the Muslim members of our community.
