County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Pike District Fall Fest and Ribbon-Cutting

Marinelli Road & Rockville Pike

As prepared

It’s great to be here for the inaugural street festival for the Pike District!

Thank you Chair Tom Murphy, Ken Hartman, and the Downtown Advisory Committee for organizing this community event.

I appreciate all of the support this event has received from local partners: Lerner, Federal Reality, Strathmore, Marriott, the Chamber, and others.

This is the beginning of an effort to create an “urban partnership” for the Pike District, Montgomery County’s newest urban center. This partnership will improve quality of life through beautification projects, marketing, and activities.

Along the Pike, former large-scale suburban developments are transforming into lively, pedestrian-friendly blocks (i.e. Mid-Pike Plaza, Pike & Rose, and North Bethesda Market)

This area is filled with activity centers and amenities including:

  • The Strathmore Music Center and AMP

  • The Conference Center and Shriver Aquatic Center

  • A growing bicycle network that includes the Bethesda Trolley Trail and separated bike lanes on Woodglen Drive and now Nebel Street.

  •  And Metro’s Red Line

These facilities attract thousands from throughout the DC region and beyond to live here, work, and visit.

Since 2010, the Pike District (8.2%) has gained more residents faster than anywhere else in the region.

We have the highest concentration of millennials along the red line in Montgomery County, including here in Pike District.

These great characteristics will only get better as more people and business call the Pike District home.
