County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Founders Day Celebration

Double Tree Hilton Hotel; 8727 Colesville Road, Silver Spring

As prepared

Good afternoon!

I am honored to be here today with my brothers for this momentous occasion.  This is especially significant since, as you know, this December is the 110th birthday of our brotherhood.

Through the course of those 110 years, the Fraternity has grown to number more than 290,000 members over 730 active chapters spanning four continents.

For the past 45 of those 110 years the Iota Upsilon Lambda Chapter has embodied the Fraternity’s mission to develop leaders, and promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.

Members now hold major leadership positions throughout Montgomery County; including elected and appointed officials, Fortune 500 companies, owners of small business and nonprofits, as well as volunteers in educational and other community organizations.

You used these positions as platforms from which to lead the way in your quest to promote brotherhood, develop leaders and be servants to the community.

You have accomplished this through community betterment programs and by directly addressing the needs and concerns of the local African American population.

You have established a long tradition of supporting the needs of minorities in the County by sponsoring programs that honor Black Heritage, recognize student achievers, award college scholarships, and address the pertinent health needs of the population.

Montgomery County is a better place because of your service and leadership. The Iota Upsilon Lambda Chapter is a shining beacon for the African American community and Montgomery County as a whole; and I want to personally thank you for your contributions.
