What is scrap metal?

A rule-of-thumb is that scrap metal is any item that is 51% or more metal.

What are examples of small scrap metal items?

Examples of small scrap metal items include:

  • clothes irons
  • doorknobs
  • hinges
  • keys
  • metal inserts from file folders
  • metal wire stands for yard signs
  • metal plates and bowls
  • pots, pans, and skillets, including non-stick cookware
  • screws, nails, brackets, hinges, nuts, bolts, and other hardware
  • metal shower heads
  • toasters and toaster ovens
  • wire clothes hangers

What happens to small scrap metal items disposed as trash?

Trash collected through County-provided collection service, or delivered directly to the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station, is processed at our Resource Recovery Facility. After the trash is processed, metal items are recovered from the resulting ash, and are recycled.
