County Officials to Celebrate Walk To School Day at Gaithersburg Elementary School

Montgomery County Councilmember Sidney Katz, Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, and Dr. Jack Smith, superintendent, Montgomery County Public Schools will celebrate Walk to School Day at Gaithersburg Elementary School.

Joining them will be Principal Meredith McNerney, Michael Paylor, division chief, Montgomery County Department of Transportation, Montgomery County Police Department personnel, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel and Gaithersburg Elementary School students, patrols, staff and parents.

Note to Editors: The students will use the crosswalk on Teachers Way as part of a County effort to remind pedestrians of all ages to use the crosswalk, while also reminding drivers to be alert for pedestrians. The event will feature safety characters Sparky the Firedog and Zeal the Crosswalk Zebra as well as public safety equipment such as a fire engine. There will be a brief call-and-response session with the children about using crosswalks, in both English and Spanish.

Schedule:

8:40 – Meet at Gaithersburg Middle School (2 Teachers Way) to join Gaithersburg Elementary students, staff, and parents for the walk

8:55 – Officials, Sparky and Zeal will accompany children as they use the crosswalk at Teachers Way, toward Gaithersburg Elementary School

9:15 – Following the walk, students will assemble on the blacktop next to the school
