Council Spotlight

Open Housing Law

Councilmember Will Jawando presented a proclamation recognizing the anniversary of the Open Housing Law, which was passed by the Council on July 20, 1967 and which prohibited discrimination in the sale or rental of virtually all housing. This legislation significantly advanced the civil rights movement by establishing equal opportunity housing for residents and represented one of the broadest such laws in the nation. The Council was joined by James Stowe, director of the Office of Human Rights.
