Council Spotlight

Recognizing National Mentoring Month

Councilmember Will Jawando is joined by County Executive Elrich and Daon McLarin Johnson of Mentory Maryland | DC to recognize January as National Mentoring Month, a celebration to recognize with praise and gratitude those who mentor, while also encouraging others to volunteer as mentors.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, mentoring programs stepped up to fill gaps for young people and families by connecting them with resources and ensuring that mentoring relationships continue virtually so that physical distancing does not lead to social disconnection.

Mentoring encourages healthy choices - students who meet regularly with their mentors are 52% less likely than peers to skip a day of school, and youth who face an opportunity gap but have a mentor are 55% more likely to be enrolled in college than those who did not have one.
