Commemorating Black History Month 2024

On Feb. 6, 2024, the Council commemorated Black History Month with a proclamation led by Council President Andrew Friedson and Councilmembers Will Jawando and Laurie-Anne Sayles. To celebrate this year’s national theme of “African Americans and the Arts,” the Council highlighted how African Americans have impacted visual arts, dance, music, fashion, folklore, language, film, cultural movements and more.

The commemoration included a presentation showcasing Kenneth Smith, a social studies teacher at Montgomery Blair High School who created and teaches Hip Hop History and Culture; Levi Robinson an award-winning artist; and Angela Ingram. a folklore educator, dancer and dance instructor.
