Recognizing Autoimmune Awareness Month

On March 12, 2024, Councilmember Will Jawando presented a proclamation for Autoimmune Awareness Month, a month dedicated to enhancing understanding and recognition of the over 100 identified autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac, type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is the third most prevalent disease category after cancer and heart disease. At least four percent of the global population is affected, and rates are increasing every year.

Advocacy, education and research are necessary to improve the lives of the millions who live with autoimmune diseases and improve prevention. Montgomery County residents can better protect their health by becoming aware of the risks, signs, and treatments for autoimmune diseases.
