Commemorating Juneteenth

On June 18, 2024, leading up to the commemorative events held throughout the County on Wednesday, June 19, Councilmember Will Jawando presented a proclamation recognizing #Juneteenth. He was joined by LaTisha Gasaway-Paul, chair of the Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival and Dr. Sylvea Hollis, associate professor of African and African American history at Montgomery College. Juneteenth recognizes the day in 1865 when more than 200,000 slaves in Galveston, Texas learned from Union troops that they had been “freed,” two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
