Council Spotlight

Fire Prevention Month

On Oct. 15, 2024, the Montgomery County Council’s Public Safety (PS) Committee Chair, Councilmember Sidney Katz and committee members Councilmembers Dawn Luedtke and Kristin Mink presented a proclamation recognizing October as Fire Prevention Month. They were joined by Dr. Earl Stoddard, assistant chief administrative officer, on behalf of County Executive Marc Elrich, along with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) Chief Corey Smedley. This year’s national theme for Fire Prevention Month is "Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You." Montgomery County was the first major jurisdiction in the United States to adopt a “retrofit” smoke alarm law which required smoke alarms to be installed in all homes. This October, Montgomery County asks all County residents to make, review, and practice their home fire escape plans with everyone living in the home and check smoke alarms and make sure they are operational.
