Council Spotlight

Juneteenth

On June 17, 2025, Council Vice President Will Jawando and Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles present a proclamation recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth in Montgomery County.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, becoming a federal holiday after the dedicated efforts of Ms. Opal Lee, “the Grandmother of Juneteenth.”

The Council encourages residents to join celebrations for Juneteenth taking place across Montgomery County this Thursday, June 19th.
