The Montgomery County Council recognized February as Black History Month on Feb. 14 by paying tribute to this year’s national theme of “Crisis in Black Education.” Many long-time residents of the County, who grew up in the one-time historically black communities of Montgomery, were present to recall their experiences attending segregated schools—and eventually seeing more educational opportunities for them and ensuing generations. A video created for the event recounted the evolution of the historically black communities of Tobytown in Potomac and Lincoln Park in Rockville. That video can be viewed at
