From the Office of Councilmember Evan Glass
ROCKVILLE, Md., June 6, 2019—Montgomery County Councilmember Evan Glass (At-Large), will be kicking off Pride Month with County Executive Marc Elrich, members of the County Council and leaders of the LGBTQ community on Monday, June 10 at 11:30 a.m. with a flag raising ceremony at the Executive Office Building’s Veterans Memorial Plaza (101 Monroe Street in Rockville). Montgomery County will be raising the Pride flag for the first time in its history. Councilmember Glass is the first LGBTQ member of the Montgomery County Council.
“The LGBTQ+ community is a beautiful tapestry that includes all gender expressions, gender and racial identities, immigration and socioeconomic statuses,” said Councilmember Glass. “It is this rainbow of experiences that make the Pride flag a significant symbol of our diverse community. As the County’s first LGBTQ+ Councilmember, I am honored to partner with the County Executive and my colleagues on the Council in flying the Pride flag to express our firm commitment of support for the LGBTQ+ community and that we are committed to working towards full equality.”
“We need to be clear – Montgomery County supports our LGBTQ+ community,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “As County Executive, I am committed to recognizing people’s fundamental rights. We will continue the work to make our County more welcoming so that everyone can pursue their dreams.”
“The Montgomery County Council continues to highly value the diversity of our County, and both celebrates the contributions of the LGBTQ community, and recognizes that nationally, there is still much work to do to advance LGBTQ rights” said Council President Navarro. “We are One Montgomery, and it is with tremendous honor that I participate in today’s Pride Month Kickoff and celebrate our continued commitment to diversity.”
The June 10 ceremony is open to the public and will feature remarks by Councilmember Glass, County Executive Elrich, Council President Navarro and members of the County Council.
A series of LGBTQ events are also scheduled throughout Montgomery County during the month of June to celebrate Pride Month.
