Montgomery County Council President Evan Glass issued the following statement following the announcement that Senator Benjamin L. Cardin will retire at the end of his term.
“Senator Cardin has done an exemplary job representing the people of Maryland and has been a lifelong champion for quality healthcare, the environment and good government.
“In his nearly six decades in office, he has a proven track record of uplifting the working class, fighting to improve health outcomes for all, and protecting universal human rights.
“Senator Cardin played a pivotal role in passing landmark legislation to preserve clean air and America’s waterways, safeguard protections for patients in healthcare settings, and expand access to affordable, quality dental care for youth. As a third-generation Marylander, he has been a dedicated defender of Maryland’s treasured Chesapeake Bay.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, he established programs to help small businesses in Maryland and nationwide mitigate the worst impacts of a crushing recession.
“Throughout his career, he has been a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, returning citizens, and has fought to prohibit racial and religious profiling at the hands of law enforcement and discrimination in the workplace.
“We thank him for his lifelong commitment to public service and commend him for an unmatched legislative record. Montgomery County, the state of Maryland and the nation are better because of his service.
“We know that he will remain steadfast in his dedication to work as he completes his term.
“Thank you to our friend, Ben.”
