Sidney Katz inducted into
City of Gaithersburg Hall of Mayors
Former longtime City Mayor and Councilmember
was honored in ceremonies on Feb. 6
ROCKVILLE, Md., February 7, 2017—Montgomery County Councilmember Sidney Katz, who served the City of Gaithersburg for 38 years including as a Planning Board Commissioner from 1976 to 1978, as a Councilmember from 1978-98 and as mayor from 1998 until 2014, on Feb. 6 was inducted into the Gaithersburg Hall of Mayors. His 16 years as mayor ended in November 2014 following his election to the County Council representing District 3, which includes Gaithersburg.
Councilmember Katz was inducted in ceremonies led by current Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman at Gaithersburg City Hall. A portrait of Councilmember Katz was unveiled at the ceremonies, whose attendees included his fellow County Councilmembers Nancy Floreen and Craig Rice.

Councilmember Katz serves on the County Council’s Public Safety Committee and on its Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee
Councilmember Katz is a lifelong resident of Gaithersburg and attended Gaithersburg High School.
Councilmember Katz was inducted into the Maryland Municipal League Hall of Fame in 1998, and is a graduate and fellow of the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance. He served as president of the Maryland Municipal League (MML) in 2008-09.
While mayor of Gaithersburg, Councilmember Katz listed among his most significant accomplishments the fact that with thoughtful and innovative planning, the City continued to deliver outstanding services and amenities to its residents while remaining debt free.
Councilmember Katz graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Maryland. A lifelong resident of Gaithersburg, he was the owner of Wolfson’s Department Store in Olde Towne, a small retail store started by his grandparents in 1918 and family-operated until 2013. Councilmember Katz and his wife, Sally, have two children.
