MCDOT Director Al Roshdieh and Deputy Director for Policy Chris Conklin visited a third-grade class at Stone Mill Elementary School in North Potomac after they wrote to the County Council to see if anything could be done to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety at the intersection of Stonebridge View Drive/ Unicorn Way and Travilah Road.

After a traffic engineering review, MCDOT installed a pedestrian refuge island on Travilah Road, enhanced the crosswalks by adding ADA ramps and advance warning signs. In addition, MCDOT is looking at upgrading intersection lighting.

Roshdieh and Conklin discussed with students the importance of civic engagement so government can better serve residents’ needs. The students got a real-world lesson in how they can take action to improve their own community.
