ROCKVILLE, Md., July 16, 2018—County Cable Montgomery (CCM) has won a top national award at the Alliance for Community Media’s annual conference in Baltimore, Md. CCM was awarded first place in the Overall Governmental Access Category.
Each year the Alliance’s Hometown Media Awards competition recognizes and honors the best community-access television programs in the United States. The 2018 Hometown Media Awards received more than 1,000 entries. They all are submitted and evaluated on several factors, including budget, experience and subject.
“One of the essential functions of government is to help residents understand the public policy issues that impact their lives,” said Council Vice President Nancy Navarro, who also serves as chair of the Council’s Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee. “I am proud to have spearheaded efforts that have led to expanded civic engagement throughout Montgomery County by enhancing the Council’s communications outreach and capacity. In addition, the Council has focused on reaching two of the fastest growing populations in the county—the Latino and the Asian American communities. We are doing this in a linguistically and culturally proficient manner through the Council’s Latino and Asian American public information officers.”
The entry included segments from the following programs:
“County Report This Week”--Reports on the Metro Red Line update to the Montgomery County Council; Zika virus; a summer camp for kids on careers; and a ribbon-cutting at a solar power project.
“Council Wrap-Up”-- The vote on the minimum wage bill.
“One on One”-- An interview with Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett.
“Did You Know”-- Profile of the DC Diaper Bank in Silver Spring.
“Parks, Rec ‘n Roll”-- A visit to the Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood.
“Made in Montgomery”-- A visit to the Maryland Bio Lab, a mobile STEM lab for students.
“Paths to the Present”-- The history of Germantown.
“Capsula Informativa del Condado de Montgomery”-- A wrap-up of the year in County news (in Spanish).
“En Sintonia TV”-- A discussion about early childhood education (in Spanish)

County Cable Montgomery was created in 1985 to provide the public with information about county government services, operations and events. In addition to the programs listed above, CCM broadcasts traffic cams, live public hearings, press conferences, town hall meetings, a community bulletin board, and other public interest shows. The channel airs on Xfinity channels 6 and 996; RCN channels 6 and 1056; and FiOS channel 30, as well as on montgomerycountymd.gov/CCM.
The Hometown Media Awards honors and promotes community media, and local cable programs that are distributed on Public, Educational and Governmental access cable television channels. Awards are presented to creative programs that address community needs, develop diverse community involvement, challenge conventional commercial television formats and move viewers to experience television in a different way. The mission of the Alliance for Community Media is to promote civic engagement through community media.
