Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival to be held on Sunday, September 23

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 12, 2018

The Second Annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival, a day of free events highlighting the area’s arts community, will take place on Sunday, September 23. The parade starts at 10 a.m. on Georgia Avenue in Downtown Wheaton. The festival runs from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Wheaton Veterans Urban Park on Fern Street.

More than 45 artists, marching bands, dance companies, arts floats and costumed performers will “March for Art,” traveling north on Georgia Avenue from Prichard Street to Price Avenue. Parade viewers are encouraged to watch from the east side of Georgia Avenue.

The arts festival will feature three stages of local performers, musicians, dancers and student performers. Among the featured tent exhibitions will be one highlighting local film and literary talents through live podcasts, storytellers and poets. The event will include performances from two Strathmore artists-in-residence, the Olney Theatre Center and winners from the MoCo’s Got Talent competition.

More than 50 artists and arts organizations will be displaying and selling their work in a tented exhibition area and community organizations and government departments will promote their art-related programs. Interactive artist demonstrations will include printmaking, bookbinding, mosaics, cupcake decoration and green screen weather reporting. Children and families can participate in activities including face painting, balloon art and making a robot.

Wheaton is one of three Maryland Arts and Entertainment Districts in Montgomery County. The Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival celebrates the arts and cultural diversity of the community and is supported in part by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery Council, Westfield Wheaton, the Montgomery County Department of Recreation, Montgomery Parks and Planning and numerous local businesses and community organizations.
