Traffic Flow Plans for Revitalized Downtown Wheaton to be Discussed by Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee on Tuesday, March 12

For Immediate Release: Friday, March 8, 2019

Traffic flow for future Downtown Wheaton after construction is completed on the Wheaton Revitalization Project in 2020 will be the featured topic at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, at the regular monthly meeting of the Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee (WUDAC). The committee meets in the upstairs conference room of the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad at 2400 Arcola Ave.

Michael L. Paylor, division chief for the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, will be presenting traffic flow concepts to the committee. The meeting is open to the public.

Future traffic flow, particularly around the Wheaton Triangle business district, has been a subject of discussion since construction began in 2017 on the Wheaton Revitalization Project.

The project will transform Wheaton’s central business district by providing a mixed-use, transit-oriented development. The project includes construction of a 14-story government office building that will provide 397 below ground parking spaces, first floor retail space and a new town square. The local roads that form the Triangle area include Grandview Avenue, Reedie Drive and Triangle Lane. The main occupant of the new building will be the relocated Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, which is now in Downtown Silver Spring. The 308,000 square-foot building, which is seeking to achieve LEED platinum certification, also will be home to several County departments including Permitting Services, Environmental Protection, Health and Human Services, Recreation and Community Use of Public Facilities. In addition, relocating to the new building will be the Wheaton Urban District and the Mid-County Regional Services office.
