Green events of all types are happening throughout April as Montgomery County continues its celebration of Earth Month. Among the events still ahead is the annual Greenfest celebration on Sunday, April 28, that is moving to Brookside Gardens in Wheaton for the first time.

This year marks the 49th anniversary of celebrating April as “Earth Month,” which brings attention to the devoted worldwide efforts to protect air, water and land in a sustainable way. Montgomery County has embraced environmental stewardship as a fundamental responsibility to preserve and sustain the planet. The County has been a longtime leader in emphasizing this year’s official Earth Month theme of “Protect Our Species.” 

Here are some of the remaining Earth Month events and programs that will help make this an environment friendly start to spring:

  • DC Environmental Film Festival at Brookside Gardens. 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton. The Montgomery County GreenFest partners has joined with the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital to present documentary free screenings.   • Stream Cleanups. Contact [email protected] for more information about the following cleanups and to ensure that sufficient supplies are provided for volunteers. Student Service Learning hours are available: April 19 (Friday). 11 a.m.-1 p.m. White Oak Park, Silver Spring (Stewart Lane and Lockwood Drive). April 22 (Monday). 10 a.m.- noon. Earth Day Stream cleanup--Townes of Gloucester neighborhood (Burtonsville).
  • Takoma Park Silver-Spring Coop Earth Day Celebration. April 20 (Saturday). 11 a.m.-4 p.m. 201 Ethan Allen Ave., Takoma Park. Free day of events. There will be green vendors, local food, community groups, speakers, demonstrations, music and even a toy exchange for kids. https://tpss.coop/earth-day-2019/
  • Montgomery County GreenFest. April 28 (Sunday). 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Brookside Gardens. 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton. The free event has many fun activities for the whole family from kids tree climbing to music and exhibitors.
