Montgomery County Receives National Recognition for its Popular Annual Financial Report

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, July 16, 2019

Montgomery County has received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Award for Outstanding Achievement for its Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) for the year ending, June 30, 2018. This is the second year in a row Montgomery County has received this award.

In order to be eligible for the PAFR award, a government must also submit its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) to GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting (CAEFR) program and receive the CAEFR award for the current fiscal year. Montgomery County has won the CAEFR award every year since 1972, more than any county in the nation.

“The PAFR represents the County’s enduring commitment to financial transparency to its residents,” said Michael Coveyou, acting director of the Department of Finance. “It is a more user-friendly presentation of the County’s award-winning Comprehensive Annual Financial Report”

According to the GFOA, judges evaluate each eligible report on a variety of categories, including reader appeal, understandability, distribution methods, creativity and other elements. GFOA covers state and local jurisdictions in the United States and Canada and reviews PAFRs from many of them. The results are then compiled to determine the award winners.
