Ride On Shuttle Connects Montgomery Friendship Picnic and Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, September 24, 2019

On Sunday, Sept. 22, Ride On provided a critical shuttle connection between two popular County events. The seventh annual Montgomery County Friendship Picnic at Wheaton Regional Park, which brings people of diverse cultures and faiths together to discuss ways to build a stronger community, and the third annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival, a day of free events celebrating the artistic and cultural diversity of the community, both drew crowds on a warm September day.

The special Ride On service included three bus shuttles:

  • Bus 1 made the route from Reedie Drive and Fern Street, going from the Wheaton Arts Festival to the Friendship Picnic on the hour every half hour.
  • Bus 2 made the route from the ice rink and ball fields of Wheaton Regional Park off Orebaugh Avenue to Henderson Avenue every half hour.
  • Bus 3 made the same route as Bus 2 every 30 minutes, but also included a route to Wheaton High School, the site of overflow parking.

The Friendship Picnic, an initiative of the Montgomery County Committee Against Hate and Violence, offered opportunities for small group conversations to discuss how to peaceably and respectfully move toward a nonviolent community. It also featured a wide range of activities for children and adults including music, dancing, moon bounce, face painting, petting zoo, carousel, train rides and more.

The Arts Parade and Festival drew more than 70 artists, marching bands, dance companies, arts floats and costumed performers who “Marched for Art.” The arts festival featured three stages of local performers, musicians, storytellers, dancers and student performers. This year’s lineup included performances from multiple Strathmore Artists-in-Residence, MoCo’s Got Talent student winners, drum lines and hip-hop dancers.
