Council Committee Meetings for Sept. 26

The following committee meetings are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26. Meeting: Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee
Time: 8:30 a.m..

Topics:
Business Advisory Roundtable, hosted by Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation
This interactive discussion will highlight the federal laboratory technology transfer process, showcase local tech transfer success stories and explore ways to accelerate tech transfer activities within Montgomery County. The roundtable will include numerous federal commercialization experts, as well as business founders, technical assistance providers and funders. See Councilmember Riemer’s release here.

Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) update on affordable housing projects - new construction, acquisition, and renovation
The PHED Committee will recieve an update on the ongoing work of HOC to: preserve and expand the County's housing safety net; preserve at-risk affordable housing; reinvest in existing affordable housing; expand the supply of affordable rental housing; and support affordable housing reinvestment and expansion by private for-profit and non-profit providers.

Topics:
Police recruitment
The PS Committee will receive an update on police recruitment from Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) representatives. For the past several years, police departments around the nation have experienced difficulty recruiting and retaining qualified police officers. According to the Police Executive Research Forum's (PERF) recent analysis of the law enforcement workforce crisis, there are a variety of reasons why police departments are finding it difficult to hire staff. The PS Committee will discuss key points of the PERF report.

Fire Department training
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) is a combined service, comprised of both career and volunteer firefighters. MCFRS responds to more than 120,000 emergency calls for service annually and is staffed by approximately 2,700 certified and trained career and volunteer responders. The PS Committee will receive an update on training practices from the MCFRS.
