For Immediate Release: Thursday, October 3, 2019

ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 2, 2019—A short documentary program featured on County Cable Montgomery has won first place in the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) Excellence in Government Programming Awards. “A Closer Look: Domestic Violence” took home the Award of Excellence in the category of Community Awareness. The show examined how the county handles the more than 5000 domestic violence calls it receives each year, and highlighted programs and services available to victims of domestic violence.

The program was produced and reported by Susan Kenedy, senior communications specialist for the Council, and Mike Springirth, audiovisual specialist for the Council, filmed and edited the project. Production included a ride along with members of the County Sheriff’s Department for the arrest of a domestic violence suspect and the confiscation of guns belonging to a suspect with a restraining order. Interviews with officials from the Family Justice Center, as well as domestic violence survivors, highlighted how Montgomery County is a leader in the treatment and prevention of domestic abuse.

“I am thrilled that County Cable Montgomery received first place from the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors Excellence in Government Programming Awards” said Council President Nancy Navarro. “While the subject of the documentary is somber, it is encouraging that efforts by the Montgomery County Council to shed light on important topics are being recognized. County cable funding enables local government to produce top-quality content on important issues affecting our community.”

NATOA honored the winners of the 34th Annual Government Programming Awards (GPA) on September 26 in Tampa, Florida. The awards program honors excellence in broadcast, cable, multimedia and electronic programming produced by local government agencies.  This year NATOA received more than 945 entries submitted by local governments across the country.
