Councilmember Jawando wins Distinguished Advocate for Healthful Living Award from SHAPE Maryland

Health and physical education advocacy organization recognizes Councilmember Jawando for his work with Montgomery County Public Schools students

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 15, 2019—Councilmember Will Jawando is being honored by the Society of Health and Physical Educators of Maryland (SHAPE Maryland) with a Distinguished Advocate for Healthful Living Award for his work with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students.

Always an advocate for physical and mental health and wellness for youth, Councilmember Jawando is being honored for:

  • Being a high school basketball coach and youth mentor
  • For his extensive work on First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Initiative, encouraging young people to engage in more physical activity and healthy eating during his time serving in the Obama Administration
  • For advocating for funding for several organizations that provide recreation, dance and sports for youth across the county during the last Montgomery County budget cycle. He also helped secure funding for a much-needed soccer field in East County.

“I am honored to receive the Distinguished Advocate for Healthful Living Award from SHAPE Maryland. I have always believed in the importance of supporting both the physical and mental health of our youth and our entire community,” Councilmember Jawando said. “The mission of SHAPE Maryland embodies these beliefs. I am proud to be associated with this organization and the excellent work they are doing in Montgomery County and across the state of Maryland.”
