ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 27, 2019—Councilmember Will Jawando will team up with Society Restaurant in downtown Silver Spring on Thanksgiving Day for their 8th Annual “Society Feeds Society.” The event serves individuals experiencing homelessness and families with low-income in Montgomery County and the surrounding area. In addition to a Thanksgiving meal, this year’s event will include a clothing giveaway and free haircuts. Councilmember Jawando has worked with the County’s Department of Health and Human Services to publicize the event to all county partners who serve the homeless community and to provide transportation for attendees.

“I am pleased to be able to participate in this year’s Society Feeds Society,” said Councilmember Jawando. “Restaurant owner Jason Miskiri, his family and restaurant staff, along with a host of volunteers will provide a delicious meal and a time of respite for some of our most vulnerable residents. This is the true meaning of Thanksgiving.”

Years ago, Miskiri, started a coat giveaway program for students with low-income at Piney Branch Elementary School in Takoma Park. Moving to Montgomery County from Guyana as a child, Jason attended Piney Branch Elementary School and was inspired by the people who were willing to lend a hand to help him and his family as he was growing up. This sparked his determination to do the same for others. After opening the restaurant, he started “Society Feeds Society”, which feeds more than 100 individuals and families each Thanksgiving.

“Society Feeds Society” will be held at Society Restaurant & Lounge, 8229 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day with an opening program and press availability at 12 p.m.
