Montgomery County Volunteer Center Offers Everyone Opportunities to Serve Together on MLK Day of Service

For Immediate Release: Monday, January 13, 2020

Monday, Jan. 20, thousands of people in the County will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and teachings by participating in the Montgomery County Volunteer Center’s annual MLK Day of Service event, which will run from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at 5701 Marinelli Road.

Participants will be able to help with a wide variety of service projects appropriate for volunteers of all ages, and students can earn service-learning hours from Montgomery County Public Schools. Activities will include packaging food for the needy, creating scarves for hospice patients, crafting Valentine’s cards for seniors, and donating new and used coats for a coat drive.

The event will also include a volunteer fair where representatives of dozens of local nonprofits and government agencies will be on hand to offer information about their organizations and ways people can volunteer throughout the year.

In addition, the Volunteer Center’s partner agencies are coordinating multi-project service events on MLK Day in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Olney, Rockville, Silver Spring, and Bethesda. Plus, several organizations will hold special volunteer events throughout the MLK Day weekend.

All events are free, but space is limited, and advance registration is required. To learn more about the program and for registration links, visit www.montgomeryserves.org.

On the same day, the County will present its annual celebration to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore located at 5301 Tuckerman Lane in North Bethesda, enabling service project participants to make a day of the holiday observance.

This family-friendly event is free and open to the public. Tickets are available on the day of the celebration in the Music Center foyer beginning at 3 p.m. Seating is general admission and one ticket will be distributed per person. Seating will begin at 3:30 p.m.
