Montgomery County’s Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center has been named 2019 Public Building of the Year by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Maryland. Selected by a jury of architects, the award recognizes excellence in architectural design. Montgomery County’s Department of General Services (DGS) managed the design and construction of the facility.
Under the direction of DGS, the DLR Group served as architect. The DGS Division of Building Design and Construction (DBDC) planned, designed, and constructed the Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center with high performance standards while considering residents’ input and environmental and economic concerns. The accessible, energy-efficient design provided for a 14,000 square-foot art and recreation center. The building includes a full-size gymnasium, social hall, kitchen, multipurpose room, fitness and weight room and more. Keller Brothers, Inc. expertly constructed the building and adjacent grounds.
“This prestigious award reflects the exceptional work of our DBDC team who take concepts for new buildings and transform those ideas into impressive public amenities,” said Department of General Services Director David Dise. “This award acknowledges the excellence in design for the construction of a state-of-the-art recreation center, which gives thousands of residents an opportunity to enjoy arts and recreation programs. This outstanding recreation facility is managed by our recreation department under the leadership of my esteemed colleague Robin Riley.”
The Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center, located at 14715 Good Hope Road in Silver Spring, opened on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018. The new facility replaced the former center, which was in severe disrepair. The design includes an innovative use of space for an art/music and educational activities in East County.
Montgomery County Recreation serves the local community by providing a wide range of activities including recreational sports, children’s play, athletics, and enrichment classes for youth and adults. In partnership with the Strathmore Center, the facility also accommodates and serves as a performing arts venue.
