Montgomery County Council Committee Meetings on Feb. 3

The following committee meetings are scheduled for Monday, Feb. 3. Individuals interested in attending a committee meeting should confirm the information on the day of the meeting by visiting the Council’s web page at tinyurl.com/CountyCouncilMeetings or by calling the Council’s Communications Office at 240-777-7832.

Meeting: Public Safety (PS) Committee
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Location: Seventh floor hearing room
PS Committee: Council President Sidney Katz (Chair), Councilmember Gabe Albornoz and Council Vice President Tom Hucker
Topic: Police Training
The PS Committee will review Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) police training. Representatives of MCPD will discuss the basic training provided at the police academy, specialized training for positions like school resource officers and District Community Action Teams and comparative data from other police departments nationwide. Chief Marcus Jones, MCPD, and Captain Jason Cokinos, director, Training and Education Division, MCPD, are among those expected to attend the meeting.

Meeting: Education and Culture (E&C) Committee and Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Location: Third floor conference room
E&C Committee: Councilmembers Craig Rice (Chair), Will Jawando (Lead for Libraries) and Nancy Navarro
Topic: Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL)

The E&C Committee will receive an update on MCAEL which is a countywide adult English literacy network that supports a thriving community and effective workforce. Through coalition building, MCAEL envisions a “culturally diverse community in Montgomery County where dreams are achieved through the power of literacy.” MCAEL Executive Director Kathy Stevens will brief the committee on the organization’s activities, accomplishments and priorities.

Meeting: Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee
Time: 2 p.m.
Location: Third floor hearing room
PHED Committee: Councilmembers Hans Riemer (Chair), Andrew Friedson (Lead for Parks) and Will Jawando
Topic: Overview of the General Plan

The PHED Committee will receive a briefing on the General Plan – Thrive Montgomery 2050. The General Plan is a policy document that guides, over multiple decades, how the County will develop, change and respond to future opportunities and challenges. It provides a long-term vision and broad policies to guide future land use planning, public investments in infrastructure and community amenities and private development. Thrive Montgomery 2050 will ultimately result in an update to the County’s General Plan. Over the past several months, the Planning Department has reached out to the community, gathering their thoughts, ideas and concerns regarding the County. Those expected to attend the meeting include the following: Gwen Wright, director, Planning Department; Caroline McCarthy, chief, Research and Special Projects, Planning Department; and Khalid Afzal, special projects coordinator, Director’s Office, Planning Department.
