Statement from Council President Katz on deaths of four Montgomery County residents related to Covid-19 and new cases

For Immediate Release: Thursday, April 2, 2020

ROCKVILLE, Md., April 2, 2020—Council President Sidney Katz made the following statement after Montgomery County health officials released information about the deaths of four Montgomery County residents associated with Covid-19 and provided details about new cases in nursing homes and an infant diagnosed with the virus.

All of the members of the Montgomery County Council are thinking about the families who are suffering because of the loss of their loved ones to Covid-19. We send them our deepest condolences. Two men in their 70s, one in his 80s and another in his 40s are the latest victims of this insidious virus.

We are also deeply saddened to learn that an infant has been diagnosed with the virus and that 10 nursing homes are reporting cases. These cases reinforce what our health care experts have been telling us. Covid-19 can infect anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation or social background.

Sadly, we are only beginning to experience the tremendous impact that this global pandemic will have on our community. As we brace ourselves for more deaths in the coming days and weeks, we remain hopeful because our community is home to world-class medical and research institutions, outstanding medical professionals and dedicated first responders who are doing all they can to conquer this health care crisis, but they can’t do it alone.

Every community member is responsible for helping to stop the spread of Covid-19. We implore residents to stay home unless travel is essential, wash your hands and contact your health care provider if you become sick. Right now, these are the only weapons we have to stop the spread of this virus. We must all work together to maintain good health for ourselves, our families and for the more than one million residents who call Montgomery County home.
