Statement from Council President Sidney Katz on Department of Correction and Rehabilitation employee testing positive for COVID-19

For Immediate Release: Monday, April 6, 2020

ROCKVILLE, Md., April 6, 2020—Council President Katz made the following statement upon learning that a County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation employee tested positive for COVID-19.

There are countless men and women across our community who continue to serve the residents of Montgomery County each and every day during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, our hearts go out to an employee at our Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DOCR) who has tested positive for COVID-19. We wish the employee a full and speedy recovery. We also are thinking about the DOCR employees who serve along with this employee, especially those who are now quarantined. Under Director Angela Talley's leadership, and with the actions and guidance from our public health experts, I know that the department is taking the appropriate steps to help mitigate the spread of this virus across DOCR staff and among those who are incarcerated.

The Council stands ready to provide any additional resources needed to protect our employees to the maximum extent possible, as this health crisis unfolds. Throughout these challenging times, we pledge to continue working with our departments and agencies to ensure that our employees have working environments that are as safe as they can be to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

I want to reiterate our appreciation for the outstanding work that our County government employees are performing to keep our community safe and provide essential services for our residents. Your work is making an immeasurable difference, during this unprecedented time in our County's history.
