Press Releases - Department of Transportation

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, July 8, 2020

As part of Montgomery County Department of Transportation's (MCDOT) multi-year White Flint project, the portion of Executive Boulevard between the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center entrance and Old Georgetown Road closed permanently on July 8 at 10 a.m.

MCDOT is constructing new and reconstructing existing roads to create improved walkability and bike ability in the White Flint West area.  The project implements the vision of the White Flint sector plan and directly supports the goals of the County’s Vision Zero program that seeks to eliminate severe injuries and fatalities in traffic-related incidents. Improvements include sidewalks, bikeways, slower vehicle speeds, public use space, connectivity to park and recreational facilities, streetscapes and transit-oriented development in proximity to the Metro station and existing and proposed development.

Grand Park Avenue will be extended south from Old Georgetown Road to the new Banneker Avenue, Marinelli Road and Nicholson Lane. Banneker Avenue will extend west to Old Georgetown Road. The intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Executive Boulevard will be realigned and connect to Towne Road.

To aid pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists, MCDOT has installed variable message signs (VMS) and posted detour plans.
