On Wednesday, July 15 from 7 to 9 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold an online public meeting to discuss the Grove Street Neighborhood Greenway Pilot Project, which is expected to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety. The meeting will offer an opportunity for MCDOT project staff to gather real-time, feedback on the project. Based on community input from the meeting, an online survey and other comments, MCDOT will develop an implementation plan that will be presented to the public by early fall 2020.

Located on the edge of downtown Silver Spring between Sligo Avenue to the south and Bonifant Street to the north, this section of Grove Street has been identified as a future neighborhood greenway in the County’s adopted Bicycle Master Plan. 

A neighborhood greenway is a street where the safe movement of bicyclists and pedestrians is prioritized, and the fast, through movement of vehicles is minimized. To accomplish these goals, greenways may use speed reduction techniques, such as speed humps, diversionary treatments and other tools. The Grove Street Neighborhood Greenway will test temporary treatments that can be modified or removed depending on the results of the pilot project.

Registration is required prior to the virtual meeting so MCDOT can share meeting instructions, pertinent communications and project materials in advance.

Participants are encouraged to review the project webpage prior to the meeting. The website includes:

  • A Resources tab with project materials.
  • An interactive map under the Participate tab to facilitate location-based review and comments. 
  • A survey that provides the opportunity to specify preferences regarding Grove Street and the potential treatments. The public is encouraged to read the Neighborhood Greenway Treatments Primer before taking the survey.   

The virtual meeting will use the Zoom platform. Although using a computer to “attend” the meeting is recommended, those without computer access will be able to listen to and participate in the meeting using a phone. More details, including how to log in to the meeting, will be sent early next week to those who have registered.
