For Immediate Release: Friday, October 2, 2020
Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Safe Routes to School program in partnership with the Department of Recreation are hosting six free sessions of a Back to School Bike Tour. This youth bicycle safety education program teaches biking basics, rules of the road, proper helmet fitting, and how to communicate using hand signals. Bicycles will be provided, although participants have the option to bring their own bicycles. Those attending will receive a free helmet. The events require proper use of face coverings and compliance with other COVID-19 prevention precautions listed below.
The first two bike classes start this Saturday, September 26, in Germantown and North Potomac recreation centers. To create an account to register, visit activemontgomery.org. Active Montgomery is an online database that combines recreation classes and facility reservations for Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). An account is required to register for one of the free bike education classes described below.
When registering you will see how many openings remain and can request to be added to a wait list for any classes that are full. Registrants should be sure to review the health and safety guidelines listed on each class page. Class options include:
Saturday, October 3
Sunday October 4
Remember to stay at least 6 feet from people you don’t live with (social distancing) whenever possible. Bikes will be disinfected between use. Please wear your mask at all times during the class and wash or sanitize hands before and after riding. Cover coughs and sneezes and discard used masks and tissue in trash, and stay home if you are not feeling well. For special accommodations please contact a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist at 240-777-6870 or email [email protected].
