For Immediate Release: Monday, June 18, 2007
The Wheaton African American Book Group will celebrate Juneteenth by hosting a free, community-wide discussion of “The Covenant with Black America,” on Saturday, June 23rd at 11a.m. at the Wheaton Library, 11701 Georgia Ave.
Juneteenth, an African American holiday of interest to all, celebrates the end of the Civil War. Slaves in Texas first learned of their freedom on June 19, 1865, two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
The book was written by PBS television host and radio commentator Tavis Smiley and others. Through a collection of essays, the work details six years' worth of symposiums convened by a group led by Smiley that plot a vital course for African Americans. The works explain how individuals and households can make changes that will immediately improve their circumstances in areas ranging from health and education to crime reduction and financial well-being.
Copies of the book, a “New York Times” bestseller, are available for checkout from branches of Montgomery County Public Libraries.
