ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 22, 2021—Council President Tom Hucker and Vice President Gabe Albornoz will hold a media briefing on Monday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. They will discuss the inauguration and how the new administration will work with the County and the state of Maryland. Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles or Deputy Health Officer Dr. James Bridgers will also join to discuss the latest information on COVID-19 vaccination efforts.
Council President Hucker will hold a separate press conference immediately after to discuss Expedited Bill 50-20, also known as the Mercury Service Regulator Bill, which would require landlords to schedule the immediate replacement of indoor mercury service regulators that regulate the flow of natural gas into the home and can cause natural gas to build up and ignite, if not installed properly. The bill comes in response to the 2016 explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments in Silver Spring, which was caused by a failing mercury service regulator.
The Council President will be joined by housing and renter advocates and tenants who will share personal testimony and support for this bill. Speakers include members from CASA, the Renter’s Alliance and AOBA.
